Hon. Robinah Nabbanja

Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda

Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja is a Ugandan educator and politician who has been serving as the Prime Minister of Uganda since 21 June 2021. She is the first woman to hold this position in the country’s history. She was appointed by President Yoweri Museveni on 8 June 2021 and confirmed by Parliament on 21 June 2021 .

Early Life and Education

Born on 17 December 1969 in Kamusenene village, Nkooko Sub-County, present-day Kakumiro District, Western Uganda, Nabbanja hails from a humble background. She is the seventh of eleven children. Her father, John Kayiira, was a farmer and tailor, and her mother is Nzeremeri Nakato.

She attended Nkooko Primary School and later St. Edward’s Secondary School Bukuumi for both O-Level and A-Level studies. Between 1990 and 2000, she obtained certificates and diplomas in leadership, management, and development studies from various institutions, including Uganda Martyrs University, Uganda Management Institute, Islamic University in Uganda, and the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi. She earned a Bachelor of Democracy and Development Studies and a Master of Arts in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University. In October 2023, she graduated with a Master of Arts in Monitoring and Evaluation from Nkumba University .

Political Career

Nabbanja began her career as a teacher at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Kakumiro from 1993 to 1996. She then served as a District Councillor representing Nkooko Sub-County in Kibaale District from 1998 to 2001, concurrently holding the position of Secretary for Health, Gender, and Community Services.

From 2001 to 2010, she served as a Resident District Commissioner in the districts of Pallisa, Busia, and Budaka. In 2011, she entered elective politics as the Woman Representative for Kibaale District in the 9th Parliament. Following the creation of Kakumiro District in 2016, she was elected as the Woman Representative for the new district and was re-elected in the 2021 elections .

In December 2019, Nabbanja was appointed as the State Minister of Health for General Duties, a position she held until May 2021. On 8 June 2021, she was appointed Prime Minister of Uganda, becoming the first woman to hold the office since the country’s independence in 1962 .

Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja is married to Mr. Hassan Musafiri, a former chairman of Nkooko Sub-County in Kakumiro District. The couple has two daughters.

Hon. Matia Kasaija

Born on 28 May 1944 in Kibaale District, Uganda, Hon. Kasaija pursued his higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1967. ​

Political and Professional Career

Hon. Kasaija’s political journey began in 1980 when he was elected to the Ugandan Parliament. He briefly served as the State Minister for Labor under President Milton Obote’s administration. During the Ugandan Bush War, he joined the National Resistance Army’s External Wing, contributing to the movement that brought the current government to power. ​

Between 1987 and 1990, he served as the Executive Director of the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board, overseeing properties expropriated during Idi Amin’s regime. He later held the position of Deputy Director for Mass Mobilization at the National Resistance Movement Secretariat. ​

In 2006, Hon. Kasaija was appointed as the State Minister for Internal Affairs, a role he held until 2011. Subsequently, he served as the State Minister for Finance (Planning) until his elevation to the position of Minister of Finance in 2015

From May to September 2018, she served as the Resident District Commissioner for Sembabule District. ​
