ABOUT THE KING

Omukama Rukirabasaija Agutamba Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I has served as the 27th monarch of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom since his coronation on June 11, 1994. Born on June 18, 1948, he is the son of Sir Winyi IV of Bunyoro, who reigned from 1927 until the abolition of Ugandan kingdoms in 1967. Following the restoration of traditional monarchies in Uganda, Omukama Iguru ascended the throne, reinstating the cultural heritage of his people.​

His traditional family name, known as empaako, is Amooti. Throughout his reign, Omukama Iguru has been instrumental in promoting the kingdom’s cultural identity and has founded the Association of the Representatives of Bunyoro-Kitara to further this mission. He was formally recognized in the Uganda Gazette legal notice No. 303 of 2014

Omukama Iguru I has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, reflecting his contributions to cultural preservation and international relations:​

  • Grand Cordon, Royal and Hashemite Order of the Pearl: Awarded by the Royal House of Sulu in the Philippines, this honor recognizes meritorious service in support of the royal house or other distinguished contributions of international renown. ​
  • Grand Cross, Order of Saint Lazarus: A chivalric order with historical roots, acknowledging significant contributions to humanitarian and charitable causes.​
  • Grand Cross, Order of the Queen of Sheba (Ethiopia): An Ethiopian honor bestowed upon individuals who have made notable contributions to society, reflecting the deep historical ties between African monarchies.​
  • Kabalega Star, Republic of Uganda: Named after the renowned Omukama Kabalega, this national award honors exceptional service and dedication to the nation.​
